The LumaChess reference library
Pawn structures
Know the pawn map. Understand the plans. Study how strong players make those plans work. Every chapter explains piece squares, what to trade or keep, pawn breaks, attack and defence, and when to change your plan.
A curated foundation of 20 important structure families, not a universal ranking or a claim to contain every chess idea. Plans are conditional: verify king safety, piece placement, move order and concrete tactics in the actual position. White and Black refer to the illustrative diagram; reverse the roles when the structure appears with colors reversed. Pawn-only diagrams are teaching maps, not legal game positions. Explanations and study questions are original LumaChess synthesis; cited articles support selected themes, and explicitly labeled course overviews link to further study rather than reproduce paid lessons or annotations.
